Xuan Kong Period 1 (1864–1883): One White 水Water 一白 · 水Water

Period 1 of the 玄空飛星 (Xuan Kong Flying Star) cycle ran from 1864 to 1883. The ruling star is 一白 (One White), of the water element. The career-and-intellect period — Star 1 White Water in command, anchoring buildings to a register of mobility, communication, and clear thought.

Period 1: One White 水Water

When this period operated

Period 1 of the 玄空 (Xuan Kong) Flying Star cycle ran from 1864 to 1883. Buildings constructed during this 20-year window carry a permanent Period 1 anchor in their natal period chart.

The ruling star: 一白 (One White)

Each of the nine periods is governed by a different star number from the Luo Shu (洛書) sequence. Period 1's ruling star is 一白 (Star 1 One White), of the water element, classically associated with the north palace and the trigram.

一運:一白貪狼星當令,主官祿、智慧、聲名遠播。

Buildings constructed during Period 1

Buildings whose period chart is anchored in Period 1 carry a register oriented around career mobility, intellectual sharpness, and clear communication. Households living in Period 1 buildings during current Period 9 read against that period-1 anchor with the period-9 fire star overlay — a register-mismatch that an audit reads precisely.

Modern relevance: reading Period 1 buildings today

Few residential buildings still in habitable use date to Period 1 (1864–1883), but heritage shophouses, colonial-era houses, and Singapore conservation properties from this era do exist and carry the Period 1 anchor. For these properties, the period-1 read is structural even after multiple ownership cycles unless a major renovation has reset the period chart.

The natal Period 1 anchor stays with the building permanently. To read a Period 1 home in the current Period 9 (2024–2043), the natal period chart is overlaid with the Period 9 transit pattern — that interaction determines which sectors of the home are activated each year. 2027 Annual Feng Shui and 2028 Annual Feng Shui cover the year-by-year overlay.

Why generic Period 1 guidance fails

The period anchor is one layer of the feng shui reading, not the whole reading. The household's actual experience also depends on the building's 阳宅三要 configuration (door, master bedroom, stove octants — see FS-8: Singapore HDB & Condo for the door×master matrix), the occupants' personal BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu charts, and the year-on-year flying-star transits. Generic per-period guidance can name the natal anchor and the most-watched register; it cannot tell you which patterns activate for your household. Master Sean Chan’s blog post on the chart-house interconnection covers this multi-layer reading.

Practical priorities for Period 1 buildings

  • Identify your home’s period from the construction year (or the major-renovation year that may have reset it). For most current Singapore housing stock this is Period 7 (1984–2003), Period 8 (2004–2023), or Period 9 (2024–present).
  • For Period 1 buildings, the most-watched register is career advancement, intellect, communication, diplomacy, fluid social mobility. Whether this register actually activates for your household depends on the chart-aware audit layers.
  • Pre-purchase audit. If you are evaluating a Period 1 property before signing the option-to-purchase, a pre-purchase feng shui audit reads the period anchor against your personal charts and gives you a chart-fit ranking before contractual commitment.
  • Existing-residence audit. A full residential feng shui audit reads the natal Period 1 anchor + current Period 9 overlay + your charts together, and produces specific structural / orientation / timing guidance.
  • Do not rely on object-based remedies for the period anchor. The period chart is a structural feature of the building; it cannot be modified by retail products. Classical correction is structural (sector-specific room allocation, entry-sequence adjustment) and timing-based (avoid certain transit years for major decisions).

Frequently asked questions

My home was built in 1869. What period chart does it have?

A home built in 1869 would be anchored to Period 1 in its natal period chart. The natal anchor stays with the building permanently unless a major renovation resets it (which is structural and chart-specific). The natal Period 1 reading is then overlaid with the current Period 9 transit pattern to produce the year-by-year flying-star register.

Does my home’s period change when we enter a new period?

The natal period anchor does not change automatically when the cycle moves to a new period — it stays with the building based on its construction (or major-renovation) year. What changes is the current period overlay: from 2024 onward, all buildings are read against the Period 9 transit pattern regardless of their natal anchor. So a Period 1 home is now read as “Period 1 natal × Period 9 current”. Major renovations can sometimes reset the natal anchor — whether yours qualifies is one of the questions a residential audit answers.

Should I avoid buying a Period 1 property?

Period 1 is one of the auspicious anchors in the nine-period cycle, so the foundational reading is generally supportive. Whether it is chart-fit for your specific household requires reading your personal charts against the period anchor + the current Period 9 overlay. A pre-purchase audit answers this concretely.

RESIDENTIAL FENG SHUI AUDIT

Living in a Period 1 home? Read all the layers together.

Master Sean Chan’s residential feng shui audit reads the natal Period 1 anchor against your personal BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu charts and the current Period 9 overlay. The audit produces specific structural, orientation, and timing guidance for your household. Zero object recommendations.
