When this period operated
Period 1 of the 玄空 (Xuan Kong) Flying Star cycle ran from 1864 to 1883. Buildings constructed during this 20-year window carry a permanent Period 1 anchor in their natal period chart.
The ruling star: 一白 (One White)
Each of the nine periods is governed by a different star number from the Luo Shu (洛書) sequence. Period 1's ruling star is 一白 (Star 1 One White), of the water element, classically associated with the north palace and the 坎 trigram.
一運:一白貪狼星當令,主官祿、智慧、聲名遠播。
Classical Xuan Kong reading for Period 1.
Buildings constructed during Period 1
Buildings whose period chart is anchored in Period 1 carry a register oriented around career mobility, intellectual sharpness, and clear communication. Households living in Period 1 buildings during current Period 9 read against that period-1 anchor with the period-9 fire star overlay — a register-mismatch that an audit reads precisely.
Modern relevance: reading Period 1 buildings today
Few residential buildings still in habitable use date to Period 1 (1864–1883), but heritage shophouses, colonial-era houses, and Singapore conservation properties from this era do exist and carry the Period 1 anchor. For these properties, the period-1 read is structural even after multiple ownership cycles unless a major renovation has reset the period chart.
The natal Period 1 anchor stays with the building permanently. To read a Period 1 home in the current Period 9 (2024–2043), the natal period chart is overlaid with the Period 9 transit pattern — that interaction determines which sectors of the home are activated each year. 2027 Annual Feng Shui and 2028 Annual Feng Shui cover the year-by-year overlay.
Why generic Period 1 guidance fails
The period anchor is one layer of the feng shui reading, not the whole reading. The household's actual experience also depends on the building's 阳宅三要 configuration (door, master bedroom, stove octants — see FS-8: Singapore HDB & Condo for the door×master matrix), the occupants' personal BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu charts, and the year-on-year flying-star transits. Generic per-period guidance can name the natal anchor and the most-watched register; it cannot tell you which patterns activate for your household. Master Sean Chan’s blog post on the chart-house interconnection covers this multi-layer reading.
