Understanding Purple Star Astrology

WHAT IS ZI WEI DOU SHU?

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), literally "Purple Star Calculation," is the most sophisticated system of Chinese astrology. Developed over 1,000 years ago during the Song Dynasty, it maps over 100 stars across 12 Life Palaces to reveal detailed insights about your destiny, personality, and life path.

Unlike Western astrology which focuses primarily on personality traits, Zi Wei Dou Shu excels at timing predictions. Through its Decade Luck (大限) and Annual Flow (流年) systems, practitioners can pinpoint when wealth opportunities arise, when career changes occur, and when relationships transform.

The system is also known as Purple Star Astrology, ZWDS, or Emperor Astrology — named after the Zi Wei star (紫微星), which represents the Emperor in Chinese cosmology. Your Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is calculated from your exact birth time and reveals the cosmic blueprint that shapes your entire lifetime.

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) is a form of Chinese astrology originating in the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), attributed to the Taoist sage Chen Tuan (陳摶). It maps 14 major stars, over 30 auxiliary stars, and Four Transformations (四化) across 12 Life Palaces to analyze personality, predict life events, and forecast timing of changes in wealth, career, and relationships. It is considered the most technically sophisticated branch of Chinese astrology alongside BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny).

Core Concepts in Zi Wei Dou Shu

THE FOUR TRANSFORMATIONS & STAR BRIGHTNESS

Two systems govern how stars behave in your chart: the Four Transformations (四化) determine which stars are dynamically activated, and star brightness (廟旺得平陷) determines how powerfully each star can express its nature. Generate your chart to see your Four Transformations and brightness ratings.

The Four Transformations (四化 Si Hua)

The Four Transformations are the dynamic engine of Zi Wei Dou Shu forecasting. Each year, decade, and natal chart activates four specific stars with one of four modifiers. Understanding which stars carry your transformations — and where they land — is the key to ZWDS prediction.

TransformationChineseEffectAnalogy
Hua Lu化祿Abundance, smooth flow, opportunityA river flowing freely — resources come naturally
Hua Quan化權Authority, control, decisivenessA commander taking charge — power is consolidated
Hua Ke化科Fame, recognition, scholarly honorA scholar receiving honors — reputation is elevated
Hua Ji化忌Obstruction, attachment, turbulenceA knot that binds — energy is blocked or fixated

Star Brightness Levels (廟旺得平陷)

Every major star in Zi Wei Dou Shu has a brightness rating that changes depending on which palace (Earthly Branch position) it occupies. A star at Miao (廟) brightness expresses its full positive potential, while a star at Xian (陷) is weakened and may bring challenges.

LevelChineseMeaningEffect on Star
MiaoTempleFull power — highly auspicious, the star expresses its best qualities

DeObtainedModerate strength — generally favorable with some limitations
PingNeutralAverage expression — neither strongly positive nor negative

Zi Wei Dou Shu vs. Western Astrology

While both systems analyze celestial influences on human destiny, Zi Wei Dou Shu and Western astrology differ fundamentally in their approach, source data, and prediction methods.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Everything you need to know about Zi Wei Dou Shu, the calculator, and the masterclass.

Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), also known as Purple Star Astrology, is one of the most sophisticated forms of Chinese astrology. Unlike Western astrology which uses physical planets and sun signs, ZWDS uses a system of "virtual stars" — mathematical points derived from your exact birth time — mapped across 12 Life Palaces covering wealth, career, relationships, health, and more. It excels at predicting when events will happen through its Decade Luck and Annual Flow system, not just describing personality.

Enter your birth details: select Lunar or Solar calendar, choose your gender, input your birth year, month, day, and two-hour birth period. Click "Generate Chart 排盤" to create your natal chart. The calculator displays all 14 major stars, 31 auxiliary stars, brightness ratings, and Four Transformations across 12 Life Palaces. Use the mode buttons to switch between Natal (本命), Decade Luck (大限盤), and Annual Flow (流年盤) views to see how influences change over time.

The calculator generates the structural chart — the star placements, palace assignments, brightness levels, and Four Transformations for your natal, decade, and annual layers. What it cannot do is interpret the relationships between stars and palaces, assess the quality of specific life areas, or guide you on timing decisions. That layer of application is what the masterclass teaches — and what a professional consultation delivers.

Both are Chinese astrology systems using birth time, but they differ significantly in approach and application. BaZi (Four Pillars / 八字) analyzes the Five Elements balance in your birth chart and is excellent for understanding personality, elemental strengths, and general life patterns. Zi Wei Dou Shu maps 100+ stars across 12 Life Palaces, providing more granular insights into specific life areas like career, wealth, relationships, health, and property. ZWDS also excels at precise timing predictions through its Decade Luck (大限) and Annual Flow (流年) systems, allowing practitioners to pinpoint specific years or decades when major life events occur.

The 14 Major Stars are the primary celestial bodies in ZWDS that define your core personality and life themes. They are: Zi Wei (紫微/Emperor), Tian Ji (天機/Advisor), Tai Yang (太陽/Sun), Wu Qu (武曲/Finance), Tian Tong (天同/Blessing), Lian Zhen (廉貞/Judge), Tian Fu (天府/Treasury), Tai Yin (太陰/Moon), Tan Lang (貪狼/Desire), Ju Men (巨門/Orator), Tian Xiang (天相/Minister), Tian Liang (天梁/Scholar), Qi Sha (七殺/Warrior), and Po Jun (破軍/Pioneer). Each star carries unique archetypes and governs specific aspects of life depending on which palace it occupies.

Master Sean is a battle-tested practitioner with over 10 years of full-time consultation experience, featured in CNA, Harper's Bazaar, The Straits Times, and other major media. This course is built directly from classical Chinese source texts — not watered-down modern interpretations from certification mills. It covers advanced techniques like Flying Stars (飛星), derived palaces (宫位转換), and the He Luo method that most courses never touch.

No Chinese proficiency is required. All classical texts and concepts are translated and explained in English. The Chinese characters you encounter are treated as symbolic labels — Master Sean guides you through their meaning and application step by step. Hundreds of students with zero Chinese have completed the course and read charts confidently.

The calculator uses the classical chart plotting method — Destiny Palace derived from lunar month and birth hour, Five Element Bureau from the Na Yin system, Zi Wei star placement via the quotient-remainder formula, and standard distribution rules for all 14 major stars and 31 Yi-level auxiliary stars. It includes a full solar-to-lunar calendar conversion engine covering 1900–2100, ensuring accurate calculations for both calendar systems.

The calculator displays three chart layers: your natal chart (本命), Decade Luck (大限盤), and Annual Flow (流年盤). However, interpreting these layers for actual predictions requires understanding star interactions, palace relationships, Four Transformation activations, and timing triggers. Without proper training, the chart is data without context — you can see the stars but not read their message. The masterclass teaches this interpretive layer comprehensively.

The 12 Palaces are the structural framework of every ZWDS chart, each governing a specific life domain: Life (命宮), Siblings (兄弟宮), Spouse (夫妻宮), Children (子女宮), Wealth (財帛宮), Health (疾厄宮), Travel (遷移宮), Friends (交友宮), Career (官祿宮), Property (田宅宮), Fortune (福德宮), and Parents (父母宮). The stars occupying each palace — and their brightness levels — determine the quality and trajectory of that area of your life. Explore all 12 palaces

The Four Transformations (四化, Si Hua) are dynamic modifiers that activate specific stars in your chart: Hua Lu (化祿/abundance), Hua Quan (化權/authority), Hua Ke (化科/fame), and Hua Ji (化忌/obstruction). They are determined by the Heavenly Stem of your birth year, decade period, and annual flow — meaning different stars are activated at different times in your life. This layered activation system is what makes ZWDS uniquely powerful for timing predictions. Learn more about the Four Transformations

Star brightness (廟旺得平陷) is a five-level rating system that determines how effectively a star can express its nature depending on which palace it occupies. The levels are: Miao (廟/Temple — full power), Wang (旺/Prosperous — strong), De (得/Obtained — moderate), Ping (平/Neutral — average), and Xian (陷/Fallen — weakened). A star like Zi Wei at Miao brightness in your Life Palace is far more auspicious than the same star at Xian brightness. See the brightness rating guide
