A personal kua is one of 8 trigrams (1 Kan, 2 Kun, 3 Zhen, 4 Xun, 6 Qian, 7 Dui, 8 Gen, 9 Li — there is no Kua 5; people with computed kua=5 use Kua 2 if male or Kua 8 if female) computed from birth year and gender. The kua sorts people into the East Life Group (kuas 1, 3, 4, 9) or the West Life Group (kuas 2, 6, 7, 8), and Eight Mansions doctrine reads each group’s 4 favourable + 4 unfavourable octants accordingly.
