The 120 classical configurations of the BaZi 日主行業 (Day Master × Industry) matrix — 10 Day Masters × 12 industries. Classical BaZi maps each commercial industry to a primary element register; reading the Day Master’s element against the industry’s element gives a first-pass fit signal. The signal is one input of four — chart-aware career reading also requires the Day Master’s strength in season, the Useful God, and shen sha at career-related palaces.
The 120 Day Master × Industry configurations
This is the master directory for the BaZi Day Master × Industry matrix. Classical BaZi associates each commercial industry with a primary element register (the 五行行業 mapping); reading the Day Master’s element against the industry’s element gives a first-pass fit signal that classical practitioners use as a starting heuristic. The 120 configurations describe how each of the 10 possible Day Masters reads against each of the 12 industries.
Voice constraint: these pages name the elemental fit signal and describe the classical register for each industry; they do not teach the procedure for determining your Day Master’s strength in season, identifying the Useful God, or reading shen sha against career-related pillars. For a chart-aware reading on your specific career question, book a BaZi consultation; for self-study, use the free BaZi Calculator; for learning the methodology in depth, the BaZi Bootcamp covers it from beginner through intermediate.
⚠️ Why the Day Master alone is not enough
The Day Master is one signal in a complete career-fit reading. Classical BaZi doctrine layers four inputs into any industry-choice reading:
Day Master in season. Whether the Day Master is “in season” (得令), “out of season” (失令), or in transitional position — determined by the month branch — modifies the entire industry-fit calculus.
Heavenly stems vs Earthly branches. The hidden stems (人元) within each earthly branch contribute to the chart’s elemental balance and can reverse a surface reading.
The Useful God (用神). The elemental register the chart is short on or over-supplied with — the gate through which the entire industry-fit calculus passes. Two charts with the same Day Master and different Useful Gods may have opposite recommended industries.
Shen sha (神煞). Auxiliary stars derived from the chart’s pillars — Heavenly Nobleman, Academic Star, Travel Star, Robbery Killings, Peach Blossom — that activate around career-related palaces and can confirm, modulate, or contradict the Day-Master-elemental fit reading.
This matrix describes the first input. Use it as a classical starting heuristic, not a final answer.

Look up your Day Master in the matrix above. Read the cell pages for the industries you’re considering — this gives you the first-input elemental fit reading.
Read the “Why the Day Master alone is not enough” section on every cell page. The matrix gives you a classical starting heuristic, not a final answer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I choose my career based on my BaZi Day Master?
The Day Master is one classical signal among four. Reading the Day Master’s element against an industry’s element gives a useful starting heuristic and reveals the broad elemental register the industry runs on. It does not, by itself, predict career success or failure. The complete career-fit reading also requires the Day Master’s strength in season (the month branch determines whether the Day Master is “in season” or “out of season”), the Useful God identification (which elemental register the chart is short on), and the shen sha that activate around career-related palaces. Two BaZi charts with the same Day Master can have opposite recommended industries depending on these other three layers.
How does classical BaZi map industries to elements?
Classical BaZi groups industries into five elemental categories: Metal (finance, banking, law, manufacturing, surgery, jewellery, accountancy — the work of refining and judging); Fire (marketing, media, technology, entertainment, energy, hospitality — the work of attention and expression); Earth (real estate, construction, agriculture, insurance, mining — the work of foundations and durability); Wood (education, healthcare, publishing, traditional medicine, charity — the work of growth and restoration); Water (logistics, shipping, F&B, tourism, trade — the work of fluidity and transport). The mapping is not absolute — many industries carry secondary element registers, and modern industries (technology, software) post-date classical sources and require interpretive consensus.
What is the Useful God (用神) and why does it matter for career choice?
The Useful God is the elemental register that the chart is short on or over-supplied with — the element that, if added or moderated, restores the chart’s balance. Identifying the Useful God is the gate through which the entire career-fit reading passes. A Yang Water Day Master with Fire as the Useful God might thrive in marketing or technology (Fire industries) despite the surface element controlling relationship; a Yang Water Day Master with Earth as the Useful God might thrive in real estate or construction even where the surface elemental fit looks neutral. The Useful God reading determines which side of the surface heuristic a specific chart sits on.
What shen sha matter most for career reading?
The most career-relevant shen sha are: Heavenly Nobleman (天乙貴人) for institutional access and senior-mentor support; Academic Star (文昌) for analytical, scholarly, and writing-heavy careers; Travel Star (驛馬) for mobile, international, and shipping/logistics careers; Robbery Killings (劫煞) as a caution flag in partnership-heavy industries; Peach Blossom (桃花) for creative, public-facing, and hospitality work. A chart-aware reading identifies which of these shen sha are present in your chart and where they land — the difference between a Heavenly Nobleman in the Career palace versus the Self palace shifts the reading substantially.
