The classical 八宅 (Eight Mansions) doctrine assigns every door × master bedroom configuration to one of eight outcome classes. The four auspicious classes are ranked from most-auspicious (生氣宅) to mildly-auspicious (伏位宅); the four inauspicious classes are ranked from mildly-inauspicious (禍害宅) to most-inauspicious (絕命宅). Each class has a defining classical phrase, a characteristic register that households commonly experience, and (for some) a key caveat that warrants attention.
This page is the diagnostic-overview hub for the eight classes. The page shows what each outcome looks like in practice and which trigram pairings produce it. The Singapore HDB & Condo hub shows how Singapore’s templated property layouts concentrate around four of the eight classes specifically.
The eight classes, ranked
Sheng Qi Generating Breath · 1 of 8 (most auspicious)
Key register: Career advancement, household prosperity, generative momentum
Households commonly report sustained career advancement, generational wealth accumulation, growing family lines, and the kind of forward-momentum that compounds over decades. Among the eight classical outcomes, this is the strongest auspicious register.
Tian Yi Heavenly Doctor · 2 of 8
Key register: Health, immunity, recovery from chronic conditions
Households commonly report strong constitutional health, fast recovery from illness, low rates of chronic disease, and the kind of restorative quality that supports longevity. Reliably auspicious for households with elderly occupants or anyone managing existing health conditions.
Yan Nian Longevity · 3 of 8
Key register: Marriage longevity, partnership stability, intergenerational harmony
Households commonly report stable marriages, durable partnerships, and intergenerational harmony — though the classical text flags a long-residency caveat regarding the female occupant's health. Couples in stressed marriages tend to find this configuration helps; couples in healthy marriages benefit but should be attentive to the female occupant's health register over multi-decade residency.
Classical caveat:
Fu Wei Stable Position · 4 of 8
Key register: Stability, status quo preservation, gentle support without dramatic change
Households commonly report a stable, predictable register — income holds steady, relationships preserve their existing state, no dramatic upside but also no dramatic downside. Most favourable for retirees, occupants in long-term consolidation phases, and households whose primary need is grounding rather than growth.
Huo Hai Calamity · 5 of 8 (mildly inauspicious)
Key register: Petty disputes, minor recurring accidents, gossip cycles, low-grade friction
Households commonly report low-grade ongoing friction — petty workplace disputes, minor recurring accidents, gossip cycles within the household or the family, the slow erosion of energy through accumulated small irritations rather than through any single dramatic event. The mildest of the four inauspicious outcomes; manageable with site-specific correction.
Liu Sha Six Killings · 6 of 8
Key register: Legal disputes, contractual breakdowns, romantic rupture, multi-front harm
Households commonly report patterns of legal-adjacent friction (contract disputes, formal complaints, court appearances), romantic-relationship rupture, and the kind of multi-source pressure that hits authority, finances, and emotions simultaneously rather than sequentially. The classical attribution ‘six killings’ refers to the spread — harm from multiple directions at once rather than one concentrated source.
Wu Gui Five Ghosts · 7 of 8
Key register: Theft, betrayal by trusted associates, sudden adversarial conflict, paranoid sleep
Households commonly report patterns of betrayal by close associates, opportunistic theft, sudden conflict from previously-trusted relationships, and disturbed sleep with paranoid waking patterns. The classical attribution ‘five ghosts’ refers to the unexpected, multi-source nature of the friction — harm arrives from quarters the household didn’t anticipate and from people previously assumed safe.
Jue Ming Severed Fate · 8 of 8 (most inauspicious)
Key register: Severe financial loss, life-threatening illness, total reversal of fortune, lineage threat
Of all eight classical outcomes, this is the most-watched. Households commonly report patterns of severe financial loss, life-threatening illness affecting primary occupants, fertility difficulties or reduced descendants, and the kind of total fortune-reversal that classical doctrine attributes to severed-fate qi. This configuration is the strongest case for either pre-purchase rejection or post-purchase audit-driven structural correction.
