Hanging Guest Auxiliary Star 弔客

弔客 is the sister flag to 喪門 (Mourning Gate), occupying a position later in the same rotation. Classically associated with being a guest at events of loss — attending farewells, witnessing other people’s transitions, being adjacent to ceremonies of ending rather than being the principal mourner.

In any given year, 弔客 sits ten branches ahead of 太歲. In some lineages this position is named 天狗 (Heavenly Dog) rather than 弔客; the placement is identical. In 2027 (year branch 未), it sits on 巳 (Snake).

For evaluation: 巳 holds 丙 (Yang Fire, primary), 戊 (Yang Earth), 庚 (Yang Metal). The activation reads through whichever palace 巳 occupies. For Yin Wood Day Masters needing Fire as Output, 弔客 is incidental — the Fire-element resonance with the year’s Yin Fire stem dominates productively. For charts already Fire-saturated, the same activation surfaces as ‘witnessing endings’ in the lived experience of relationships and projects burning through their final fuel. The pop advice ‘avoid funerals’ is generic; the actual reading is structural.

Auxiliary Stars (Shen Sha) are layered on top of an already-balanced chart, not before it. Hanging Guest contributes when the underlying elemental relationships are sound; if the chart is imbalanced, the star alone cannot produce its effect.

Position matters: Hanging Guest must rest on a Branch that is genuinely useful to the chart. An auspicious star sitting on a Branch your chart does not need offers very little real benefit. Treat any auxiliary star as a modifier of an existing condition, never as a standalone determinant.
