The Earthly Branch 子 (the Rat) is mid-winter — the coldest, darkest pivot of the year. Its primary flavour is pure Yang Water, and its only hidden stem is 癸 (Yin Water). When 子 sits at the Year Pillar, the year carries strong Water energy: nourishing for charts that need flow, overwhelming for charts already heavy with Water or weak in Earth.
The classical reading consideration is whether the chart has enough Earth to channel 子’s Water (Yang Earth 戊 acts as a riverbank), or enough Fire to warm the season’s deep cold. Without those, 子 leaves the chart frozen.

In BaZi the twelve Earthly Branches form fixed pairings: every branch has exactly one combination partner (六合) and one clash partner (六沖). When a chart contains both members of a pair, the relationship transforms or destabilises that part of the chart.
