Essential dignity is one of the four primary inputs classical Hellenistic doctrine reads before pronouncing on any natal placement. (The other three are sect, house placement, and aspectual configuration.) Where a planet sits in the dignity scheme determines whether the planet acts according to its own nature, operates through a hospitable host’s register, or labours under a sign whose ruler is its functional opposite.
The five layers of essential dignity, in descending order of strength:
Domicile — the planet’s own sign. The planet acts undiluted, according to its own nature, without filtration by another ruler. Strongest essential dignity.
Exaltation — a sign where the planet finds an unusually welcoming host that brings its most desirable register forward. Specific peak degrees apply (e.g., Sun exalted at 19° Aries; Moon at 3° Taurus). Second-strongest essential dignity.
Triplicity — per Dorotheus, each element (fire, earth, air, water) has three triplicity rulers (day, night, participating). A planet in a sign of its triplicity receives a real (if minor) essential-dignity overlay.
Term (Egyptian bound) — each sign is divided into five unequal sub-zones by degree, each ruled by one of the five non-luminary planets. A planet in its own term receives a small dignity bonus.
Face (decan) — each sign’s 30° arc is divided into three decans of 10° each, ruled in Chaldean order. A planet in its own face receives the smallest dignity bonus.
And the two debility states, in increasing order of severity:
Peregrine — a planet without any of the five essential dignities in the sign it occupies. The planet is a wanderer in foreign territory; it acts through the register of the host. No essential-dignity weight.
Detriment — the sign opposite a planet’s domicile. The planet operates under a host whose ruler is functionally opposite its own nature. Debilitated.
Fall — the sign opposite a planet’s exaltation. Lowest essential-dignity state. Specific low degrees apply.
The matrix below shows each of the seven traditional planets’ essential-dignity status across all twelve signs, at a glance. Click into any planet’s drill-down hub for the planet’s complete dignity profile, sect notes, joy house, and cross-links to all twelve placements.
This page lists only the major essential dignities (domicile, exaltation, fall, detriment) at the per-sign level for visual scannability. The triplicity, term, and face overlays apply at finer resolution and are documented in the per-planet drill-down hubs and in each individual placement page (e.g., Saturn in Libra Natal details the triplicity rulership and the term-by-degree breakdown for that specific placement).
Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are not part of classical Hellenistic doctrine and have no dignities in this scheme.
