South is governed by the trigram Li (離), the trigram of fire — clarity, visibility, the sun at noon. Its element is fire, its season is summer, its colour is red, and its life area is fame and reputation.
South is the most yang of the eight directions. Its energy is outward, expressive, and recognised by others. This makes it the natural sector for a kitchen (whose fire is supported by the sector’s fire), a living room used for entertaining, or a public-facing home office. It is poorly suited for a meditation space, a quiet study, or a master bedroom for someone struggling with sleep — the sector’s yang qi disturbs rest.
The element governing South is fire, supported by wood (wood feeds fire) and weakened by water (water clashes with fire) and earth (earth drains fire’s heat). Classical reinforcement for South is fire-element register through palette (reds, oranges) and through architectural / artistic elements that depict the household’s public-facing achievements. Avoid water-element register and palette (deep blue, black) in the South — the water-fire clash damages the sector’s reputation function.
In Eight Mansions, South is auspicious for the East Life Group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) and inauspicious for the West Life Group. For Kua 9 (East Life), South is the Fu Wei sector. For Kua 1, 3, and 4, South is a strong supporting direction.
