What the Yi Jing Actually Is

The Yi Jing is not a
fortune-telling app.

The Yi Jing (易经, "Book of Changes") is the oldest classical text in the Chinese intellectual canon — older than Confucius, older than the Dao De Jing, older than virtually every system of Chinese metaphysics built on top of it. It is simultaneously a manual for divination and a work of philosophical reflection on the nature of change itself. Most online "I Ching" content reduces it to a single Wilhelm-Baynes paraphrase, a coin toss, and a sentence of advice. This course teaches the actual tradition — the trigrams, the hexagrams, the Ten Wings, and the relationship between asking and reading that classical practitioners spent a lifetime mastering.

Book of Changes (易经)

Compiled across three thousand years from Fu Xi's original trigrams through King Wen and the Duke of Zhou's hexagram and line statements, then refined by Confucius and his school in the Ten Wings (十翼). The Yi Jing is the source text every other classical Chinese system borrows from.

The 64 Hexagrams (六十四卦)

Eight trigrams stacked in pairs make sixty-four hexagrams, each describing a configuration of change. A hexagram is read top to bottom, line by line, and is rarely static — moving lines transform it into a second hexagram, giving every reading a "before" and an "after."

Divination & Wisdom

The Yi Jing is consulted for specific questions through the yarrow stalk or three-coin method. But it is not a Magic 8-Ball. The classical practice is to ask, read, reflect, and act — the answer is never the end of the work, only the beginning of the conversation with the situation itself.

The Yi Jing (易经, "Book of Changes") is the oldest classical text in the Chinese intellectual canon, traditionally attributed to a chain of authors across roughly three thousand years — Fu Xi for the original eight trigrams, King Wen and the Duke of Zhou for the hexagram and line statements, and Confucius's school for the Ten Wings (十翼) commentaries. Structurally it is a system of sixty-four hexagrams (六十四卦) — six-line figures built from the eight trigrams (八卦) — each describing a configuration of change. Functionally it is consulted both as a divination tool (through the yarrow stalk or three-coin method) and as a wisdom text in its own right. Every other classical Chinese metaphysics system — BaZi, Feng Shui, Qi Men Dun Jia, Zi Wei Dou Shu — borrows its symbolic engine from the Yi Jing.
No. The course is built from first principles. Modules 01 and 02 start with what Yin and Yang actually are, what the Tai Ji means, and how polarity generates complexity — before you ever encounter a trigram. If you have studied BaZi or Feng Shui, you will recognize the underlying engines (Yin-Yang, Five Elements, Eight Trigrams) and move faster, but no prerequisite is required.
The Wilhelm-Baynes translation is a respectable mid-20th-century English rendering of the text — but reading a translation is not the same as learning the system. This course teaches the structural engine the text describes: the trigrams, how hexagrams are built from them, what changing lines actually mean, how the Tuan and Xiang commentaries function, what the Ten Wings add to a reading, and how to formulate a question that the Yi Jing can answer. You can read Wilhelm cover to cover and still not be able to do an actual reading; the goal of this course is the reading method itself.
Both. Module 11 teaches both methods and discusses their differences. The yarrow stalk method is the original — slower, more contemplative, and produces a different statistical distribution of moving lines (which classical practitioners argue carries more nuance). The three-coin method is the modern shortcut, faster, and statistically simplified. Most contemporary practitioners use coins for everyday questions and reserve yarrow for matters of unusual weight. The course teaches both because both are part of the tradition.
Yes — and Modules 12 through 14 are dedicated to exactly this. The Yi Jing is consulted on career, relationships, business, timing, ethics, health, family, and investment questions throughout the course's twelve case studies. Daily journaling practice (Module 12, lesson 6) is also taught, in which a single hexagram drawn each morning becomes a structured prompt for reflection. The Yi Jing is unusual among divination systems in that it functions equally well as a tool for major decisions and as a daily contemplative practice.
The Yi Jing is the source. BaZi inherits its Yin-Yang and Five Elements logic from the Yi Jing's underlying cosmology. Feng Shui's Compass School is built directly on the Eight Trigrams and the Later Heaven Sequence — both of which are Yi Jing material. Module 16 covers integration explicitly: how to use a Yi Jing reading to clarify a BaZi consultation's strategic question, and how the Later Heaven trigrams cross-reference between Yi Jing readings and Feng Shui assessments. Studying the Yi Jing makes the rest of Chinese metaphysics significantly easier.
