籤意 The image

此卦割肉成瘡之象。凡事守舊待時也。

This lot symbolizes cutting flesh to heal a wound. It indicates that overreacting or trying to forcibly fix a situation will only create a much worse disaster.

解曰 The reading

割肉補瘡,弄巧成拙。眼前虛歡,安守為上。

Do not create new problems while trying to solve old ones. The current situation is uneasy but manageable. Taking drastic action now will only cause severe self-inflicted damage.

典故 The episode this lot is named after

戰國時孫臏被同窗龐涓陷害,慘遭臏刑,喻防人之心不可無,且勿採取過激手段自傷。

Sun Bin, a brilliant military strategist, was betrayed by his jealous classmate Pang Juan. Pang Juan framed him and had his kneecaps amputated (cutting flesh). Sun Bin had to feign madness to survive. It is a severe warning against betrayal, false friends, and taking actions that permanently harm yourself.
