About the Oracle · 关于观音灵签

What is 观音灵签?

The 观音灵签 (Guanyin Lingqian) — also known as the Guanyin Oracle or Kuan Im divination lots in Southeast Asia — is one of the most widely practised traditional Chinese divination systems. It consists of exactly 100 numbered lots (签), each associated with a classical four-line poem (签诗), a poetic metaphor (诗意), and a formal interpretation (解曰).

Worshippers traditionally draw a lot at Guanyin temples by shaking a cylindrical container of numbered bamboo sticks (签筒) until one falls out. The system is used across Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and throughout the Chinese diaspora worldwide.

The 100 lots are classified into three fortune grades: 22 upper lots (上签) — auspicious; 60 middle lots (中签) — mixed; and 18 lower lots (下签) — cautionary. Each lot is further associated with one of the 12 earthly branch palaces (宫位).

How to Read · 解签指南

Reading Your Guanyin Lot

Whether you have drawn a lot at a temple or are looking up a number you received, here is how to approach interpretation.

🙏

Hold your question

Before entering your lot number, bring your specific question clearly to mind. The same lot speaks differently depending on what you ask.

📖

Read the poem first

The 签诗 poem is the heart of the lot. Read each line slowly. The imagery carries the core message — let the metaphor speak to your situation.

🔍

Apply the 解曰

The classical interpretation gives a four-phrase reading. Apply it to your specific situation — the same lot means different things for different questions.

Seek deeper insight

For important life decisions, a lot works best alongside your BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, which maps timing and context with far greater precision.

Questions About 观音灵签

What is 观音灵签 (Guanyin Oracle)?+
观音灵签 is a traditional Chinese divination system of 100 numbered lots, each containing a classical poem and interpretation. Devotees draw a numbered bamboo stick at Guanyin temples. It is widely used across Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Lots are graded 上上签, 上签, 中签, 下签, 下下签 and each is assigned to a palace (宫位) for timing nuance.
Is a 下下签 always bad?+
No. A 下下签 reflects the current trajectory — not an unalterable fate. It is a call to pause, reassess, and exercise restraint. Combined with understanding of your BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, a 下下签 can point precisely to where caution is needed and when conditions are likely to improve.
Can I draw 观音灵签 multiple times for the same question?+
Traditional guidance says draw only once per question (一事不二占). Drawing multiple lots for the same matter dilutes sincerity and reduces accuracy. If you have several questions, leave a gap of at least several hours between each, or ideally 12 days.
How does 观音灵签 relate to BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu?+
观音灵签 is a moment-in-time tool — it reflects the energy of a specific question asked at a specific moment. BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu are natal chart systems that map your entire life trajectory. The most insightful readings use both together: the lot identifies the immediate situation, while the natal chart explains why it is happening and what lies ahead.
How many lots does the Guanyin Oracle have?+
The 观音灵签 system has exactly 100 lots — 22 upper lots (上签, auspicious), 60 middle lots (中签, mixed), and 18 lower lots (下签, cautionary). Each lot is also assigned a palace (宫位) based on the 12 earthly branches for timing and directional nuance.
